Department of History

Department Profile

The Department of History was a part of St. Thomas College Ranny from its inception and it became a full-fledged department only after the establishment of B.A. History in 1994. Presently, it is a combined department of History and Political Science offering the regular programme, B.A. History (Model I). The complementary courses offered by the department are “Social Formations in Pre-Modern India” and “History of the Freedom Movement in India”. From 2021-22 onwards the department offers the certificate course “Application of IT in History Learning”. The course aims at introducing students of the discipline to relevant aspects and opportunities arising from Information Technology.

Every year, the department has been organising various programmes which include seminars, essay writing competitions and quiz programmes on special days, poster designing competitions, field visits to historically important places, helping hands to needy people etc… The faculty members of the department organises and participates in a wide range of conferences, seminars, and workshops in order to acquaint themselves and students with the new approaches and themes in history.

In order to explore local historical knowledge, the department in association with the Department of Malayalam created a documentary series under the title “The historical and cultural places of Pathanamthitta district”.

To create social and civic values in youth and also a passion for learning the past so as to enable them to have a better understanding about the present world.

Mission

Provide quality education by inculcating human values and equipping the students with social values and civic responsibilities so that they can serve the nation better.

Objectives

The study of History helps a lot to promote self understanding, teach tolerance, broaden the intellect, and inculcate valuable skills and methods of inquiry, which helps to enlighten the students and lead the society to a better world.

A pass in Higher Secondary Examination of the State or an Examination accepted by the University.
